The Philosophy of Nalanda
Wisdom, Logic, and Compassion
The Nalanda philosophy is rooted in the ancient monastic university of Nalanda in India (5th–12th century).
The Nalanda tradition aims to form clear-minded, open-hearted, and ethically engaged individuals, uniting knowledge, compassion, and inner transformation — an essential foundation for modern spiritual education.
It rests on three core pillars :
1. Wisdom : Understanding reality through meditation and critical study of Buddhist teachings, especially emptiness and interdependence.
2. Compassion : Cultivating active kindness toward all beings by integrating wisdom with altruistic engagement.
3. Logical Reasoning : Using rational analysis and debate to explore and deepen the understanding of spiritual teachings.
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, as the Spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhism continues to embody and share these teachings, making them relevant for the modern world.
